The Key Resume Ingredient That Makes You Stand Out In The MarketOct 05, 2021
Have you ever told someone a partial story? It’s really boring. I’ll give you an example:
I went to the store today. I did some laundry. I drove my car to work.
“That’s not a story, you say! You're just giving me a list of tasks that you did.”
And yet you think that this is the way to write a great resume.
Of course, recruiters and hiring managers want to know the tasks you did, but you know what else they want to know? Your secret sauce!
They want to know if you:
- Increased revenue
- Decreased inefficiencies
- Saved money
- Saved time
They want to know your impact.
Let’s pretend I went to the store but I ended up in this great conversation with the checkout lady. Because she enjoyed our conversation so much she decided to give me a coupon. I saved $10 in the store!
While this sounds amazing it did not happen but if it did what was so special about that encounter was the ability to have a conversation with somebody and actually save money from creating a deeply meaningful relationship.
That’s right, I just took a grocery store experience and made it into something I could put on a resume. (I wouldn't) But, I'm showing you the power of cause and effect)
I hear over and over again, “I don't really have any quantitative numbers around my tasks”
The Impact of Emotion
What if you got everyone on board with a process and effectively implemented it. Because of this new process, you created a better solution than delighted more customers. Don’t forget emotions how they too are an outcome. You delighted customers with your task.
The Impact of Listening
Don’t forget about the impact you have on people when you listen to them. If you ask great questions they will follow you anywhere, they will buy your product, they will be a part of your project, they will stay longer. All impacts you’re leaving out of your current resume.
Remember, your secret sauce is part of who you are, as much as your fingerprints. You have unique talents, remember to share their impact with the world.
